The Poincare Institute is a partnership between Tufts University, TERC, and nine school districts in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, funded by the National Science Foundation, that seeks to transform and improve the teaching and learning of mathematics in grades 5 - 9 through online courses for teachers. The Leominster school district has signed on as a partner in this project, and I am a participant of the first cohort of teachers in the Institute.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the Poincare Institute on grades 5 - 9 mathematics teachers' knowledge and teaching methods as well as their students' learning about the mathematics of functions and modeling. My students' results will be compared to those of other grades 5 - 9 students whose mathematics teachers are/are not taking the Poincare Institute's courses.
Students completed a Student Assent Form in class and a second copy is being sent home today along with a Parent Consent Form. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you take a few minutes to read through the document, and then complete the back portion regarding your son/daugter's participation in activities associated with the Poincare Institute.
ALL STUDENTS MUST RETURN A SIGNED PARENT CONSENT FORM ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7th.
If you have any questions, please e-mail me. You can also read more about the Poincare Institute by visiting their website at http://sites.tufts.edu/poincare/.
I thank you in advance for your time.
