Students in all of my US History 1 classes are receiving a permission slip today to view an excerpt from the rated R movie Last of the Mohicans...

Below is the write up from the permission slip to explain why I feel the film will be a beneficial addition to this unit.
Dear
Parent/Guardian:
Your
child is currently enrolled in U.S. History 1, which covers the history of the United States
from colonization through Civil War and reconstruction. We are about to begin a
section on the French and Indian war… a war between the French and English
fought on North American soil shortly before the Revolution. As a supplement to
the curriculum material I plan to screen a portion of the movie “Last of the
Mohicans” in class. The film, made in 1992, is rated R due to some violence and
sexually suggestive content, but is often shown in history classes on both the
high school and college level. (If the film were made today it would most
likely earn a rating of PG-13 as the rating system has changed) It portrays the
time period of the French and Indian war, offers insight into American Indian and
colonial cultures, and provides a dramatization of one famous battle from the
war.
I
hope that playing this film in class will help to bring the time period to life
for my students as well as aid them in forming a mental framework for
remembering the material they are learning about this war. Please sign the form
below to indicate that you give your child permission to view this film, or
portions therein, during class.
If
you choose not to grant permission for your child to watch a portion this
movie, an alternative assignment will be provided during the time when the
other students are viewing the film.
